Tuesday, April 21 from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm in Memorial Union

The TeAchnology! Conference is a one-day event with concurrent sessions on how to effectively incorporate various campus-supported technologies into your teaching at Mizzou. The variety of topics will provide valuable information to MU instructors from all disciplines, and with any level of technological expertise. Instructors with minimal technology experience will especially benefit.

Computers are not provided for this event. Attendees are responsible for providing their own laptops. A limited number of laptops are available for loan from Memorial Union on a first come, first served basis.

Browsing Basics and Beyond

Walt Disney Room (N208). Presenter: Guy Wilson. Session Materials

Do you know you can tap the Space bar to scroll down one screen on a Web page? There are many ways to improve your experience browsing the web. Learn about keyboard shortcuts, securing your privacy, navigating the web, extending your browser, and using online etiquette. If you are uncomfortable with a computer or feel awkward online, this session is for you.

Structuring the Blackboard Course Site

Stotler II Room (N103B). Presenter: Faydre Paulus. Session Materials

A well-organized Blackboard course site reduces instructor development time, and provides a convenient resource for students that they will actually use! In this hands-on session instructors will upload documents, create folder structures, edit the navigation, and customize their course. Attendees are encouraged to bring digital files of their course documents.

Taming the Large Lecture

This session will outline the benefits and challenges of instructor-centered and student-centered learning in large enrollment courses. Group dialogue is encouraged with the goal of identifying approaches that would be successful for different disciplines, student populations, and other environmental variables.

Faculty Guide to Teaching with Technology

Don’t invest hours learning how to use a technology before you know how you’ll best use technology in your teaching. Instructors attending this session will discuss several common Blackboard tools, how they may influence teaching and learning, and best practices including examples of how they facilitate interaction and assignment collection.

Reinforcing and Assessing Learning with Blackboard Quizzes

This session will focus on how properly utilizing Blackboard quizzes can increase student comprehension and participation in the classroom. You will get hands-on instruction on how to create a quiz, learn about various question types, and how to most effectively get Blackboard to grade the quizzes for you.

Using e-Portfolios to Conduct Authentic Assessment and Evaluation
(2.5 hour workshop)

Program leaders, department chairs and faculty members! This session will offer an in depth look at approaches to using e-Portfolios to support authentic assessment in your course or program, illuminating a range of choices and issues to consider in developing your process. During this dynamic session, we will identify the most common approaches to e-Portfolio implementation, introduce a range of resources for educators interested in building an e-Portfolio project, and hear from some of your colleagues who are currently utilizing e-portfolios in their assessment process.

Creating Effective Presentations with PowerPoint

This session is for people who have never used PowerPoint or who may have stumbled through the steps of making a PowerPoint presentation. In addition to hands-on practice creating slides that incorporate text, images and movie clips, participants will discuss the best practices for making effective presentations.

Reaching Visual Learners with Flash-based Study Tutorials

Stotler II Room (N103B). Presenter: Tanys Nelson. Installation Instructions

Easily create flash cards, quiz bowls, crossword puzzles and other interactive games from your content with the help of StudyMate software. In this hands-on session, instructors will re-purpose existing Blackboard quiz questions for use in these games or build their questions from scratch. Students will appreciate the convenience of the online format, and the fun approach to reinforcing content. StudyMate is PC-only software and is a free download for MU instructors.

Digital Media Resources

No need to reinvent the wheel. The web is rich with digital video, audio, and image resources. This session will demonstrate search techniques for finding digital assets and linking to them in Blackboard. We will also review specific software that can be used to create your own digital media content.

Increasing Student Engagement with Blackboard Communication Tools

Encourage participation in your classes by using Blackboard’s moderated discussion forums and group work areas as well as creating virtual classrooms and using instant messaging.

Encouraging Active Learning with Clickers

Stotler I Room (N103A). Presenters: Marla Germann, Guy Wilson. Session Materials

More engaged students are just a click away. For the past six years, MU instructors have used clickers (Student Response Systems) in classes of different sizes (from 8 students to 390) and content (from Anatomy through Theatre). Join us for a hands-on demonstration; discussion of techniques, use cases (such as think-pair-share and discussion starters), and outcomes; and an exploration of where this technology is leading us as it begins to migrate to phones and other mobile devices.

Engage your students by incorporating a digital media assignment into your course. This session will show attendees samples of assignments, rubrics, storyboards and student work, and explain how ET@MO can support this process.

Grade Center

Are you lost in the complexities of Blackboard’s new Grade Center? Attend this session to follow step-by-step instructions on the most common (and not so common) procedures on setting up and managing your grade book in Blackboard.

Creating Course Materials in Web Format (2.5 hour workshop)

Migrate your existing course materials to Web format, and learn to build Web pages from scratch. This session takes you step-by-step through the process of creating Web pages. Attendees must have Adobe Dreamweaver software on their computer to participate in this class. It can be purchased at TigerTech or a free, 30-day trial download is available at the Adobe Web site.
