Educational Technologies at Missouri

TeAchnology! 2008

TeAchnology 2008 is July 7 - July 11. Instructors apply to attend the Track that meets either in the Morning or Afternoon each day of the week.

Mission of TeAchnology!
Provide MU faculty with the opportunity to learn about and explore various educational technology tools in a fully supported, hands-on learning environment. Through a combination of discussion, training, and showcases faculty will develop pedagogically sound methods and strategies for incorporating educational technology into teaching.

Candidates:
TeAchnology participants are selected through a highly competitive application process. Ideal candidates are full-time faculty or graduate instructors with a primary teaching appointment who are eager to apply new and innovative teaching strategies, and have a firm foundation in technology/computing. Preference is given to applicants who teach key, or large enrollment courses.

Stipend:
Participants who complete TeAchnology receive a $250 stipend to assist with meeting their stated TeAchnology goals. Participants who meet the optional criteria for sharing their experience with colleagues receive an additional $250 stipend. Examples of acceptable purchases include educational technology-related hardware and software, training, and academic journals and conferences.

MORNING TRACK: INCORPORATING TECHNOLOGY TOOLS EFFECTIVELY

Faculty who are new to using Blackboard are ideal candidates for this track.

The Morning Track includes discussions, hands-on training, and showcases focusing on the meaningful use of technology to improve teaching and learning. Discussion sessions demonstrate technology tools currently available at Mizzou and effective integration of those technologies into the curriculum. Work sessions allow faculty to develop and implement technologies and resources into their Blackboard course site that expand their repertoire of teaching strategies.

Faculty who successfully complete the Morning Track will have integrated a select group of tools and resources in a Blackboard course site that:

  1. Directly contributes to achieving course objectives and goals
  2. Complements the instructor's teaching philosophy, skills, and content area
  3. Enriches and facilitates meaningful student interaction and assessment

AFTERNOON TRACK: PEDAGOGY AND TECHNOLOGY INFUSION

Faculty who use the basic functionality of tools in their existing Blackboard course site are ideal candidates for this track.

The Afternoon Track balances group discussions and individual work sessions focusing on course redesign and organization. Group discussions allow faculty to share teaching and learning challenges and exchange ideas and solutions with one another and ET@MO staff. Work sessions allow faculty to work on enhancing their existing course site through analysis, selection, and deployment of appropriate technologies with individual support from ET@MO staff.

Faculty who successfully complete the Afternoon Track will develop a fully realized, robust, and content-rich Blackboard course site that:

  1. Addresses previously identified teaching and learning challenges
  2. Complements the instructor's teaching philosophy and existing technology uses
  3. Allows for and encourages engagement, active learning, and/or self-directed instruction

COMMENTS FROM PAST PARTICIPANTS

"Thanks to all the instructors and administrators of this program for offering this great opportunity to learn and experience this technology. I will use most of what I learned immediately."

"I think the experience has energized my desire to teach, to try new instructional strategies and to take a hard look at the course design. I'm giving careful attention to assignments, trying to not overdo the numbers. I also see ways I can give students immediate feedback - something they really appreciate. Don't we all?"

"This week was extremely helpful. I cannot wait to implement the new technologies into my courses!"

"I was impressed with the coherence of the workshop, which I believe in part arises from the cohesiveness of the ET@MO staff."
