Educational Technologies at Missouri (ET@MO) and the Office of the Provost annually award members of the MU community who demonstrate excellence in using technology to improve teaching and learning.
The award committee, comprised of faculty, staff and a graduate student, selected Dr. Bethany Stone for the Undergraduate Teaching category and Dr. Bimal Balakrishnan for the Graduate/Professional Teaching category of the Excellence in Teaching with Technology Award.
Dr. Stone, from Biological Sciences, was nominated by a former student and a colleague for her innovative uses of technology in her Biology 1010 course for non-majors. Dr. Stone has
successfully incorporated active learning into this large lecture course by requiring students to watch certain pre-recorded lectures prior to class. She encourages more engagement in class by discussing material and applying concepts. She also allows students to text message her questions during lecture.
Dr. Balakrishnan, from Architectural Studies, was nominated by two colleagues for creating the department’s Immersive Visualization Lab (iLab) that allows students to interact on a collaborative work surface, and for developing student projects that assess the choice of tools to create design artifacts rather than assessing their use of the tool itself.
