Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and re-purposing by others.
The increasing cost of course materials at both a national level and at MU has greatly affected student academic success and retention.
Open education is a movement that seeks to improve educational experiences by providing course materials at no cost to students. Open content often consists of peer-reviewed, high quality content, and also empowers instructors to customize, share and retain their content. The University of Missouri is currently working to increase use of OER to improve the affordability of course materials on campus.
In conjunction with student groups at other SEC universities, Mizzou’s graduate and undergraduate student governments passed a joint resolution calling for the university to explore OERs. In response, the university has formed an OER group of faculty, students and staff dedicated to exploring and supporting the creation and use of OER for teaching, providing support for faculty, and improving affordability for students.
Faculty and instructors require support in finding, creating or implementing OER. Finding and creating high-quality OER takes time and additional support from organizations such as Education Technologies at Missouri (ET@MO), the University Libraries, and The Mizzou Store.
